Gang of Youths

Yes indeed, this band is well described as coming from the “Indie-Rock” persuasion, however with my personal impartiality to the generic ambiguity of the label “Indie-Rock”, I’m going to try out my own definition. Lets try, melancholic with a hint of an Americana twang and hopefully you’ll get a better vibe of what this band is all about.

Gang of Youths’ lead singer has a kindred vocal tone and grittiness similar to The Strokes’ enigmatic lead man Julian Casablancas. This of course enhances his musical expression along with the subtle, emotive lyrics in their track Evangelists. This single is their first release and cultivates it’s sense of melancholy through its cycle of riffs from both vocals and guitar that, yup you got the idea – cycle themselves, leaving listeners waiting for more… and then a lil bit more. This desire is never completely satisfied but is abandoned when the husky melody begins. A very cheeky business they’re developing here!

The Sydney based band have had a busy few months signing a record deal with SONY and spending time at the close of 2013 in the Big Apple recording their new material with NY engineer/producer Kevin McMahon. This band is set for great things in 2014 with gigs supporting the likes of Vampire Weekend, Frightened Rabbit and The Jezebels.

If any of you down in Melbourne-town like and dig this bands jive and want to see what they can do live, they’ll be starting their tour there with The Jezebels on the 2nd on May then moving onto QLD and WA.
