Over 16,000 Christians sign petition to reject Trump’s Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barrett

Over 16,000 Christians have rejected Trump’s Supreme Court nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, who has been outed for leading an extremely backwards and controversial Christian group.

It seems even Christians don’t like Amy Coney Barrett. Trump’s Supreme Court nominee has been vehemently rejected by her fellow Christian community who have condemned the ‘hypocrisy’ of positioning her as the consensus Christian choice.

More than 16,000 Christians have signed an online position launched by Faithful America, which describes itself as the largest online community of Christians who fight for social justice.

Amy Coney Barrett was formally nominated by President Trump as the Republican pick to succeed the recently passed Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. However, Judge Coney Barrett has come under fire for her anti-abortion views, and previous remarks made about the LGBTQ community.

More recently she has been outed for her involvement in the controversial Christian group, People of Praise, a community that espoused deeply traditional values about women’s roles in society.

Coney Barrett has avoided speaking publicly about her involvement; however, further evidence seems to indicate she even served in a leadership position within the group.

Members of the group are said to make a lifelong commitment, pledging 5% of their income, while also receiving an advisor who helps them navigate romantic and financial questions. Meanwhile, men are positioned as ‘heads’ of the group, with women able to take on the position of ‘handmaids’ who are not granted the same authority as male leaders.

The accusation that Coney Barrett was a ‘handmaid’ in a group that expects wives to be submissive to their husbands is just one of many issues the Faithful America group has with her nomination to the Supreme Court.

The organisation said in a post: “Republicans are planning to portray Barrett as the consensus Christian choice and claim that any criticism of her is anti-Catholic – but everything about her record says she will attack our most central rights and values. Progressive and moderate Christians alike must speak out now against this latest election-year hijacking our faith.”

In 2016, Republicans opposed President Barack Obama’s supreme court nominee eight months ahead of the election, believing the nomination was made too close to an election date. Yet, now less than a month before the election, the Republicans are trying to push Coney Barrett into the Supreme Court before Trump can potentially lose the election.

Reverend Nathan Empsall, campaign director of Faithful America told Newsweek, “We need a Senate that affirms the values of life, justice and human dignity – not hypocrisy and lies. Republican senators… were very clear in 2016 that no Supreme Court nominee should ever be considered in any president’s final year in office.”
