Glass Skies

When listening to the collaboration of a wrangling guitar riff, a solid drumbeat, a low bass and the composition of unique synths, you’d expect to find a five-piece band underneath it. But don’t be mislead. These catchy tunes and psychedelic sounds are created by Adelaide instrumental duo, Glass Skies*.

Yes, duo, as in two people. While Azz Shaw is playing up a storm with his bass guitar, keyboard and pedals playing synth, Josh Van Looy is lending his vocals, playing lead guitar and smashing away at the drums, all at the same time. Playing guitar and drums simultaneously is a talent he only discovered a few months prior to the bands inception. Glass Skies were created only in late 2012, but their success started long before that.

Ever heard of a band called Lady Strangelove? I sure had. This was Azz and Josh’s previous band and have played with the likes of Wolfmother and Black Mountain. Lady Strangelove has been in existence for over 9 years now and are still kicking on. This band was indeed the reason and inspiration for the formation of Glass Skies, apparently purely because Lady Strangelove had too many good songs for just one band. I agree!

Glass Skies offer a unique sound, similar to a 70s’ psychedelic rock band, a fusion of kaleidoscopic rhythms and heavy metal resonance. Their first single ‘Highway’ opens with one of the catchiest guitar riffs I had ever heard. The song caused me to sit at my computer, tapping my fingers along my keyboard in anticipation for the next note. The song is a true representation of having a good time.

Not only have Glass Skies been successful on Triple J unearthed, but they made a momentous appearance on Dom Alessio’s Top 5 Unearthed Podcast of the Week! Pretty impressive for such a recent band.

The Australian pair have expressed that they currently have enough songs to produce an album, so when that date is confirmed it will be one for the calendars. Until then, there are plenty of opportunities to catch the guys live – check out the dates below.
