Little May

Little May are three gals from Sydney who make breezy indie folk that makes me want to strum an acoustic guitar in the countryside while wearing a flower garland and crocheted poncho. Well, maybe not the garland and poncho, but you catch my drift…

Sharing a common love of acoustic/folk music (Local Natives, Fleetwood Mac and Half Moon Run), high school friends Liz Drummond and Hannah Field started writing music together in mid 2012 and later with the inclusion of Annie Hamilton, began playing local open mic nights. Together, they formed the indie folk three-piece Little May. With harmonious voices that meld together seamlessly, it’s almost as if their voices were made for each other.

Debut single Boardwalks introduces Little May’s impressive abilities in constructing beautiful melodies, effortless vocals and song production. The profound lyricism, raw emotion and sheer vulnerability in Boardwalks is a stunning first offering from the band’s upcoming EP.

Newest release Hide is of a similar indie folk variety, but differs in its quicker pace and presence of marching drums that creates a powerful and rhythmic momentum. Hide is brooding and melancholic, consistent with Little May’s unique brand of self-proclaimed “ghost folk,” which the Sydney songstresses explain to be “dark, eerie and powerful” music. I’m not sure exactly what ghost folk is, but I definitely want to hear more of it.

Last year saw the trio play Secret Garden Festival and the Wollombi Music Festival, and have recently performed at this year’s Laneway Festival. Touted by triple j unearthed as “the band to watch in 2014,” look out for Little May’s self-titled debut EP due early this year. Little May will join Scandinavian singer/songwriter Mikhael Paskalev on his debut Australian tour. Dates are:

Tuesday, 4th March

Alhambra Lounge, Brisbane

Wednesday, 5th March

Oxford Art Factory, Sydney

Friday, 7th March

Howler, Melbourne
