June 16th will see the iconic The Society of Tastemakers & Elegant People return to perhaps the greatest pub in Melbourne, the Toff in Town. This will be for the second installment of their music industry panels. They have already taught people in the industry how to survive as a young indie label and the collective are now setting their sights on music criticism. The people who write about music.
Some people who write about music are good at writing about music, and hopefully this panel will help people who do not write well to write better. There are several aspects that STEP will teach and they will go beyond the basics. Like sentences, letters, capitalisation and punctuation, the panel will be an invaluable and iconic experience to give insight into the inner workings of music journalism.

STEP, which stands for the Society of Tastemakers and Elegant People, is not a Doctor Who episode but actually one of the premiere music companies in Australia today. They say about this iconic event that ‘some of Australia’s best and most entertaining critics to step away from their computers and voice their opinions‘, which makes us at Happy very excited and we look forward to what they have in store.
On the panel will be the iconic Jake Cleland, who might be the greatest music writer Australia has ever seen. The Melbourne native is writing for some of the most popular blogs in the world. Thanks to the internet, this is possible and you will see why he is so popular when you read his iconic writing. His articles are angular and defy genre. It is impossible to pigeonhole Jake’s articles. There are definitely psychedelic elements to his writing, much like if Boy and Bear and Joy Division had a musical baby. This is writing for hanging out at the beach with friends and drinking a Corona with a lime.
Sarah Smith who is the current editor for perhaps the most iconic music blog in Australia Faster Louder will also be appearing on the star studded panel. She has written over 3659 articles, many of which have been about well know artists such as Eminem, Iggy Pop, Oasis and Nirvana. Her writing is jangly like a summers day, but she is not afraid to get a little bit grungy.
Certainly, the 90’s influence is strong with her and you can picture her typing at her computer while dressed like Daria. She definitely likes her psychedelic music as well, and there are influences such as Pavement and Jeff Mangum in every stroke. There is no denying that she is truly the master of music writing, up there with Jinja Safari and Flume. We can’t wait to hear what she has to say on the upcoming panel on June 16th.
Also we have the iconic Tyson Wray, whose writing can only be described as classical, archetypal, epochal, exemplary and paradigmatic. He has written reviews and interviewed some of the biggest names in music history, such as Kurt Cobain, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Kurt Cobain, Justin Timberlake, Joy Division, Lorde, Kurt Cobain, Daft Punk and Kurt Cobain.
His writing seems to look back at the sixties, but I can’t help but feel that his lens falls short of great names like The Beatles and Jazz. These artists can only be described as iconic. Lastly, the people attending and doing the panel will be treated to two great and iconic Australian bands and producers; Rat & Co. and Planète. Their psychedelic meets electronic musical stylings of both artists could be compared to Jimi Hendrix, Flume, Mozart and Archimedes of Syracuse all rolled into one musical baby.
