Dirty Projectors- Gun Has No Trigger

I immediately thought Robbie Williams when switching on the Dirty Projectors’, Gun Has No Trigger, and not in the preposterously large scale way you’d expect. It’s similar in it’s tone but super understated, very lovely indeed.

Dirty Projectors

Dirty Projectors are something else. They’re a little bit quirky but don’t underestimate the power of their killer harmonises.

It’s been a long time since I heard a voice like that… and you can find them on Spotify (which doesn’t happen very often when researching for Happy), but then again, they have been around for a while. The Dirty Projectors are a six piece out of Brooklyn consisting of David Longstreth (vocals, guitar), Amber Coffman (vocals, guitar), Haley Dekle (vocals), Nat Baldwin (bass), Olga Bell (vocals, keyboards), and Michael Johnson (drums)* and have to date released a whopping seven full length albums, since 2002.

Later into my research I discovered the likes of Frank Ocean level synthy vibes and some mad intense electrical and vocal layering in tracks such as Stillness Is The Move and  The Socialites. The Dirty Projectors boast recording collaborations with Bjork and David Byrne, performances with Major Lazer (on Jimmy Fallon) and past band members including Ezra Koenig (now Vampire The Projectors, similarly to the last band I personally looked at, have thrown genre categorization out the window. There’s a little bit of everything in there, and how can there not be, they’ve been evolving for 12 years. My oh my these guys are keeping it interesting.

“I couldn’t explain what I meant about ‘fucked-up American music’ six years ago and I’m not that interested in trying to explain it now. I just think it’s fitting to describe DPz with a phrase that’s been exploited by the worst of the worst and the corniest of the corniest, but has always had the potential to mean something rad: Uniquely American.” – Ezra Koenig (of Vampire Weekend)

*that’s one way to boost up your word count on an article. There are several others and I would go into them right now in full detail but unfortunately I’m rather busy and will perhaps email the whole team tips on how to add 50-100 words on a piece when you’re not really feeling the vibe.
