Hawk House – A Handshake to the Brain

Take a seat, recline your chair or pull up a futon, because Hawk House will massage your eardrums and have a good old chat with your mind. Hawk House are a trio, consisting of brothers Sam and Eman Croydon, and bringing the soulful lady voice is Demae.

Hawk House

Hawk House will tap into your mind and calm you right down – three times the recommended dosage of chill pills.

Straight off the bat, these guys are a trinity of cool. Their music is kind of like if Dizzy Rascal swallowed a massive chill pill. The British group creates some awesome chilled out new school hip-hop. It’s soulful, laid-back, a little jazzy and downright smooth.

Their songs present a golden-hearted message of inner city youth ideals and thoughts – giving us a peak into their views about relationships, success, money, self-image and other hardship that comes with being a young trendy urban hipster.

A Handshake to the Brain is their newest release and second mixtape from the guys. It is very well titled as they have set out to not just make music, but to engage listeners in the process, which I’m starting to gather is their M.O. It’s a compelling body of work. Progressive and smooth. Particularly the mixtape features several snippets of spoken instructions from a posh white British man. Like one of those voices narrating a science documentary.

Demae’s voice switching up with the temperate spitting from the Croydon brothers are a great mix, giving tracks a nice dynamic and flow. Their warm Rhodes chord progressions along with modest hip-hop drums can instantly put you into that chilled out mood. And I think Ta-Ku worked on a few songs!

My track picks would be The Nervous System (Topic 4) – a great showcase of Demae’s soulful 90’s vocal feels – as well as Chill Pill because, well, the name says it all. Grab a libation, sit down and have a listen.
