The Living Eyes – Guilty Pleasures

Those who say punk rock is dead have clearly never been to Geelong before. While you were just hanging out in your punk squat in the Victorian outer suburbs damning the rise of capitalism Geelong garage punks The Living Eyes have been hard at work cranking out riffy nuggets of lo-fi goodness. the living eyes

Geelong’s The Living Eyes is proof that punk rock is still alive- Guilty Pleasures is a beast. Their forthcoming LP Living Large is due later this year- keen!

Forming in the late naughties, this four-piece dynamo quickly made a name for itself, signing to ANTI FADE records and finding their niece in the Australian garage circuit. While not initially garnering a huge following on this side of the world, they have recently supported bands like King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s, Violent Soho and are now booked to play alongside TY Segall in a sold out show in December.

After a slew of tasty singles and EP’s The Living Eyes released their self-titled debut LP early last year. Its hard to miss the influence of riff driven rock and roll bands like The Rolling Stones and Joy Division in any of their tracks. However with song titles like Economy First and Slave Labour and the lo-fi sound to match, fans of early punk acts like The Ramones and the Dead Boys will surely find something to like among what is fast becoming an impressive body of work.

Their new single Guilty Pleasures is a perfect example of the bands low polish, high-energy ethos. Hard hitting drums and a beefy distorted bass give way to a catchy guitar hook and fuzzed out vocals. This and another equally beasty track are wrapped in a coloured pencil drawing of two Simpsons characters having it on in the bushes.

This absolutely grade A 7” is worth throwing fist fulls of money at your computer for, in the hopes that this band will keep doing what they are doing (damming the man with their high voltage rock and roll).
