Introducing: Daniel Lee Kendall

Is Daniel Lee Kendall just another singer-songwriter? Peering from under his wide-brimmed hat, Kendall’s press shot strikes a chord with me. A cry of desolation. Something delicate trapped in an unbreakable, unforgiving cage. It’s starting to resemble a Werner Herzog film.

Daniel Lee Kendall

The delicate tones of Daniel Lee Kendall is an inspired search for the simple things in life.

Perhaps that’s the sort of feeling you can cultivate when you’ve become disillusioned with your own music, moved to Sri Lanka and dislocated your shoulder in a motorcycle accident like Daniel Lee Kendall has. He confesses that music had become something warped. A tool to see how many ‘likes’ he could amass. How commercially successful he could be.

He had to fall in love with music again. And by God, he definitely has.

He gave himself a fresh start by taking a year away from music and heading to university. After his year away, something seems to have clicked into place for the Australian troubadour. Upon hearing the first strums of his delightfully simple track Emptiness, it’s dawned on me that Daniel Lee Kendall is unique and isn’t just another guy with a guitar.

From the Darwin Deez style lo-fi drums and clean tube amped guitar, to his distinctly spider-web thin delivery, it’s clear to me that his painfully exposed lyrics are very self-aware and more poignant than ever in this world of instant soup expectation. This is no more apparent than in the hauntingly touching line “Bring me the warmth I need my friend”. A warm and gentle reminder that there are musicians that exist not just for their bank balance. A telling sign that the human soul is essentially still at the centre of most of us.

Emptiness may well be a track about battling the demons of being alone or devoid of feeling but I sincerely hope that Daniel Lee Kendall can find comfort in the fact that his music is by no means empty.
