‘Haystack’ by Anjelica (feat. RMR) is a cosmic blend of trap and ambient textures

The star of Anjelica continues to rise. In her latest single, she’s teamed up with RMR in the slinky trap heater, Haystack.

Anjelica has a back story like no other. Raised in an environment where new age philosophy and esoteric beliefs were the norm, these influences have been infused into her artistic output.

With a string of singles under her belt, she revels in atmospheric RnB and ambient pop textures. Her fresh single, Haystack — a collab with Atlanta’s RMR — is a continuation of this trend, as well as an evolution of her sound.

Starting with an intro that hints at jazz and dub — with its guitar melody and drum echoes — the trap-infused beat hits hard, providing the template for RMR’s smoky, auto-tuned baritone. The synthy strings double RMR’s flow, but the layers are sparse — the silences are as emphatic as the sounds.

The introduction of Anjelica is beguiling. A low-key and intimate presence is set up before she launches into a new register, elevating the drama in Haystack.

Anjelica describes her approach to production as being “100% intuitive” and when you listen to a track like Haystack, it’s hard to argue. The feelings of tension and release that she’s able to bring to the track — how spacious rhythms collide with busier ones to elevate energy, how ambient synth and vocals layers appear then disappear into the ether — is effortless and innate. With only a handful of tracks to appreciate so far, Haystack is just a taste of things to come.
