In a statement released yesterday, Liz officially put the speculation to bed and declared her intentions to end her time at WNBA side the Los Angeles Sparks and says she “wants out” of LA altogether.
Elizabeth Cambage made an official announcement on Tuesday that she has made the decision to exit the Sparks mid-season. In what was seen as the pinnacle for the Australian ballplayer, the announcement of a “contract divorce” has hit the newsstands, but it has yet to be revealed what her next moves will be.
Cambage’s exit seems to have been on the cards for a while, as the ball player had made recent comments about her intentions to leave the Sparks multiple times, according to Girls Talk Sports TV, which reported chemistry issues amongst Los Angeles players that date back to late May.
Cambage has an impressive legacy in Australia, from her early days for the Australia national team, The Opals, Camabge went on to win a gold medal in the 2018 Commonwealth Games, silver in the 2018 World Cup, and bronze in the 2012 Olympics. Currently, the Australian basketball player holds the impressive WNBA single-game scoring record with her 53-point performance against the New York Liberty in 2018.
Sparks Managing Partner Eric Holoman said in a press release. “It is with support that we share Liz Cambage’s decision to terminate her contract with the organisation. We want what’s best for Liz and have agreed to part ways amicably. The Sparks remain excited about our core group and are focused on our run towards a 2022 playoff berth.”
Talking with the LA Times, Interim head coach Fred Williams said Cambage struggled with conditioning and facing double- and triple-team matchups, according to the Los Angeles Times. “I have to respect what she wants, once a person gives you that verbally what she wants, you have to listen because it could be something else, could be something that’s not related to basketball.”
Cambage posted an obscure tweet in May, “the truth will always come to light, and it ain’t even dawn yet” perhaps there is more to come from the basketball player as to why she chose to leave mid-season.
