Puremagnetik’s Parsec offers up a universe of sci-fi spaciousness

Parsec from Puremagnetik gives you unconventional panning options, using spatial manipulation to scatter sounds through three dimensions.

Parsec is the latest release from New York-based sound design company Puremagnetik, who is well-known for making plugins that walk on the wild side of audio.

In their subscription service, Spark, Puremagnetik is giving subscribers a new and often experimental plugin on a monthly basis (Spark releases can also be purchased individually). Notable releases in the past include Partikl, a granular delay “that can process your audio into unexpected musical forms”, and Clusters, “a creative modulation tool that shapes incoming audio to dynamically pulsate, shimmer and fluctuate”.

This month’s offering is particularly quirky, using spatial manipulation to scatter sound throughout the stereo field in three dimensions. Parsec allows you to place sounds throughout the X, Y and Z coordinates of spatial perception through minute phase offsets and filtering. Sounds can either be accurately placed within the room or randomly scattered using modulators.

Puremagnetik believes Parsec is ideal for “experimental sound designers, foley mixers and game composers”. For music producers, this ‘3D Perception Creature’ offers a bizarre and fun perspective on the art of panning.
