‘Chameleon’ from TOI is unapologetic pop euphoria for humid nights

With its funk bass and rounded production, Chameleon from New Zealand troupe TOI is the ultimate fuel for your party playlist.

There’s a reason TOI cruised their way onto our 2021 Needle In the Hay Finalists list. The band, previously known as Tunes of I, have cemented their place in the NZ music scene with their capable fusion of soul, funk, and pop. You might have already seen them supporting Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tash Sultana, or their good mates Ocean Alley.

Their newest single, Chameleon, produced by the accomplished Devin Abrams, showcases the band at their most refined. It’s a boogie that knows exactly what it is, channelled meticulously for dynamic effect.

There’s a handful of crafty tracks out there that transport you to a new location from the hit of the play button. Teenage Dirtbag takes you back to your high school prom or formal. Thinking Out Loud whisks you away to your dream wedding. With Chameleon, you’ll be off to a sultry nightclub, hips swaying, lip-sync on lock, and scanning the room for a good time.

The track’s bright disco beat is joined by playful electric guitar, bass, strings, and a littering of ambient samples to perk your ears up. There’s an abundance of interesting sonics that will reward repeat listeners.

The falsetto-sung hook, “Tell me what I’d do without you”, is honey-drip sleaze. This perfectly self-indulgent moment breaks way into a four-to-the-floor chorus with maximum dance party potential, with a generous serving of triumphant brass to really keep the uplifting mood intact.

“This song channels that euphoric feeling you get when you’re having a great time and is about pulling someone else into that bubble with you”, TOI commented.
