We at Happy aren’t afraid to coin new phrases, invent new genres, rattle the cages of traditional genre and make up words. Shakespeare invented like 420 new words, so why can’t we? In that vein, we’d like to re-acquaint you with Melbourne’s premiere fringe rock band The Evening Cast, who are headlining a star studded night of music, featuring The Garden Party and The Darjeelings this Saturday (7th June) down in Melbourne.
A few months later and Questions hasn’t lost any of its charm. Catch The Evening Cast launch their single at the Grace Darling Hotel this weekend.
Why fringe rock? It’s guitar music with its roots in commercial pop, tinged with the electronic indie vibes of the late 00’s, primarily listened to and performed by dudes and dudettes with fringes. Long, immaculately kept fringes – the sort you see primarily gracing the foreheads of baristas, bookshop workers and festival photographers. Lush, sedated tremolo picking, reverb and breathy vocals reign supreme in fringe rock, and the Evening Cast use all three in droves.
Having recently released their single Questions, the group are quickly making a name for themselves in breaking off the shackles of obscurity, signing to Catch Release Records and the aforementioned single reaching number 10 on the Australian Music Radio Airplay Charts. This is a chance to catch them before they start charging real money to see their show.
Supports The Garden Party seem to be lying low on the internet, the only result being a folk duo from San Francisco, which we’re 90% sure isn’t the Garden Party we need (but perhaps the garden party we deserve?). Wes Anderson aficionados The Darjeelings however, are all over it, and are a group of four ladies who play nimble fingered folk music. This is not fringe rock – this is straight up indie folk.
The Questions single launch will take place on the 7th of June (Tomorrow night) at 8:30 PM, tickets available on the door of Melbourne’s always wonderful Grace Darling Hotel.
