Just over a week ago, FKA twigs detailed her forthcoming sophomore album MAGDALENE, opening up about the inspiration behind the album and teasing that its release would be sometime this Spring.
Today, she ends months of speculation by announcing the details of the highly anticipated album, alongside the release of its second single holy terrain featuring Future.
FKA twigs details her highly anticipated sophomore album MAGDALENE, alongside the release of its second single holy terrain ft. Future.
Created in a period of low self-confidence following a heartbreak and laparoscopic surgery, MAGDALENE is the sound of twigs reconfiguring, emotionally and physically. The album is produced by FKA twigs, and, as with her debut album LP1, the recording process has been directed by her at every stage. It was recorded over a three year period between London, New York and Los Angeles, and features major contributions from Nicolas Jaar and a host of other contributors.
“I never thought heartbreak could be so all-encompassing,” said FKA Twigs. “I never thought that my body could stop working to the point that I couldn’t express myself physically in the ways that I have always loved and found so much solace.
I have always practiced my way into being the best I could be, but I couldn’t do that this time, I was left with no option but to tear every process down.
But the process of making this album has allowed me for the first time, and in the most real way, to find compassion when I have been at my most ungraceful, confused and fractured. I stopped judging myself and at that moment found hope in ‘Magdalene’. To her I am forever grateful.”
To coincide with the news of MAGDALENE‘s release, FKA twigs has released a steamy new single holy terrain, produced in collaboration with Skrillex and Jack Antonoff, and bookended by bars from Atlantan superstar Future. The track is a dark, sexy, witchy trap-tune that features warped backing ad-libs from Future, and twigs’ soaring ethereal vocals.
The release is paired with a bewitching music video, complete with mesmerising choreography, dizzying camera work and stunning costumes, it’s a visual feast that is both haunting and enchanting. Check out the video for holy terrain below.
holy terrain is the second track to be lifted from the album, following the lead track cellophane, released earlier this year, and is another seductive glimpse of what fans can expect from the new album. MAGDALENE is set to see twigs break into a whole new artistic universe and showcase some of her most innovative work to date.
MAGDALENE is set to be released on the 25th of October 2019 via Young Turks and Remote Control, and will be available on CD digitally and on two vinyl formats, including a limited edition, red-vinyl version. The album also features artwork from acclaimed artist and long-time FKA twigs collaborator Matthew Stone.
