Writer and director Jean-Marc Vallée, whose best-known credits include Dallas Buyers Club, Big Little Lies, and Sharp Objects, has died suddenly at 58.
As confirmed by a representative of his, French-Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée has passed away at the age of 58. He passed away suddenly in his chalet outside Quebec City over the weekend, although no cause of death has officially been given.
Vallée was an acclaimed director whose earliest credits included a number of music videos for Canadian artists. He went on to direct short films, before eventually moving into full-length films and TV series.
Most would come to know Vallée in his later life as he worked on a number of world-renowned projects, a turning point being 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club which earned the director and his crew six Oscar nominations.
A moving biographical film set during the emergence of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Dallas Buyers Club told the story of Ron Woodroof, a man who contracted AIDS and then set up one of many ‘buyers clubs’ to distribute essential drugs for AIDS treatment to other sufferers of the disease.
Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto would sweep the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories for their respective performances in the film.
Vallée also directed, executive produced, and wrote for two recent HBO TV productions, Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects.
