LISTEN: Salarymen – ‘Young Guns’

Salarymen, Sydney’s favourite sun-soaked indie darlings, return with Young Guns – the surprisingly disturbing lead single from their sophomore EP.

Salarymen have established themselves as one of Sydney’s premier indie-rock acts, skirting a line between nostalgia-laced melody and subtly subversive pop writing. New single Young Guns continues with the band’s trademark shiny synthesisers and guitars, but interestingly undercuts them with some of their darkest lyrics to date.

Young Guns explores gun violence in the United States, and is seemingly written from the perspective of soon-to-be high school shooter. It’s an unsettling track that deliberately lulls you into a false sense of fun and adventure, which ultimately heightens the track’s eventual gut punch.

Something this disturbing isn’t meant to sound this carefree and catchy. And that’s exactly what Salarymen set out to expose when tackling this harrowing issue.

Salarymen’s sophomore EP is scheduled for release October 20, 2022.
