Salman Rushdie, the best magical realism author of our time has a new novel slated for release in early 2023.
Author of the booker prize-winning Midnight’s Children, Salman Rushdie, has just secured a deal that will see his new novel Victory City, released in Australia in early 2023, and concurrent release in the US (Random House), UK (Jonathan Cape), and Canada (Knopf Canada) on February 7, 2023.
The transcendent prose of Rushdie is highly anticipated by his fans, not that they have been lacking, Rushdie’s substack, has seen the author quite busy, with short stories hitting his subscriber’s inboxes for some time, delighting with discussions on stories he’s read, or true stories, tall stories, or just stories about himself.
His new novel Victory City has been announced as a translation of an ancient Indian myth, and follows the story of “a woman who breathes a fantastical empire into existence, only to be consumed by it over the centuries.”
After witnessing the death of her mother, the grief-stricken Pampa Kampana has a divine encounter that will change the course of history. Pampa becomes a channel for the goddess Parvati, who begins to speak through the young girl. Bestowing on her powers beyond the young girl’s wildest imagination.
With Parvati’s, guidance, Pamapa vows to ensure that no more women suffer the same fate as her mother. Armed with this intent, Pampa’s magic creates a city; with whispered words, she inspires its people to grow and change. Writing poetry that maps the rise and fall of its empire.
Half a millennium later, her writing is discovered, buried deep in the heart of a fallen palace.
