Happy’s Best New Music

Updated weekly by the fine folk at Happy Mag, this is the absolute best new music that this week has to offer from Australia and around the world!

The Velvet Underground & Nico I’ll Be Your Mirror

I’ll Be Your Mirror is a star-studded homage to the seminal TheVelvet Underground & Nico. Just like the 1967 version, it points toward new frontiers in rock ‘n’ roll. This tribute album brings together artists like Iggy Pop, Courtney Barnett, Kurt Vile, and St. Vincent to name just a few. With executive production from Lou Reed’s friend and collaborator, the late Hal Willner, it boldly reimagines the original material and presents it in a new light.

Alt J U&ME

U&ME is the latest single from Alt J’s upcoming fourth album, The Dream. It reflects life with our nearest and dearest, exhibiting a strong sense of togetherness and the pure joy that comes from these moments. Elements of light and dark meld in this soothing track – which are also visually reflected in the music video – culminating to a dreamy single that is simultaneously honest.

Budjerah – Talk feat. MAY-A

This boppy collab seamlessly blends pop, RNB and gospel, whilst confronting modern communication preferences – texting vs. calling. The song highlights how many issues could be resolved if people just talked. It magically formats this into a healthy, fun and positive sonic that encourages honesty and alleviates the sense of awkwardness that can come with upfront communication.

+/-, pronounced “Polarity”, is draped with industrial synths and sonics and is delightfully experimental. The heavy, pulsating electronics create a sense of pensiveness and tension throughout the album, exuding East-German rave vibes, with a possible nod to Kraftwerk and early electronica. The album fuses monochromatic soundscapes with modern-tinged vocals, resulting in a body of work that is equally refreshing and enjoyable.

Ruby Fields – Doin’ It For A Bit

Ruby Fields brings life experience and self-awareness to her debut album. Doin’ It For A Bit reveals Fields laid-back and accepting persona as she presents herself honestly and openly throughout every track. It’s inspiring, particularly from a young artist, to hear such relatable lyrics that invite us to think and make us smile.
