Introducing Alt Fiction, a dreamy sonic fusion of The Strokes and The Drums

Emitting all the breezy, seaside charm you’d expect out of three brothers from the Gold Coast, Alt Fiction are guaranteed to find obsessives all over the nation.

Alt Fiction make music that sounds like a proto-Strokes; they bring a youthful indie rock vibe that seems so effortless it’s almost unfair. The group is made up of three brothers – Will, Matt and Mitch Tyler – from the Gold Coast, who’ve grown up on the same music and are finally living out their dreams of playing it together.

With two singles out so far, Alt Fiction are totally fresh off the press. Their debut All My Friends caught the attention of triple j and other Aussie media for its beach-ready guitar tones and a lyrical aesthetic reminiscent of The Drums, and now the follow-up People You Know is out to make another defining splash.

Filmed entirely be the band themselves, the clip for People You Know landed a coveted triple j Unearthed premiere as well as being named Rage’s Wild One over the weekend. It’s not hard to see why; the video harnesses Alt Fiction’s nostalgic indie charm and stretches it into HD, wearing their influences on sleeve in a clip that could have been filmed anytime between 1995 and yesterday.

The fish-eye is ’90s skate doco, the fashion is early naughties rock revival, the set is grungy and DIY, and the tune is a well-placed combination of the lot. It’s a tailor-made palette that’s guaranteed to find fans amongst Australia’s various offshoot rock scenes, from Byron Bay’s coastal jammers to Melbourne’s too-cool indie crews.

It’s very early on for Alt Fiction, but it’s clear they’re onto something. They’ve asserted their talents for both softer, more charming tunes like All My Friends and slightly punchier crowd anthems with People You Know, and with a menagerie of influences to choose from, fans are eager to hear where these young guns will take it next.

For now, if you count Bombay Bicycle Club, Albert Hammond Jr, or any of their contemporaries amongst your favourite artists from around the world, it’s time to get around Alt Fiction. Check them out on Facebook, Instagram, and Unearthed.
