summer flake band

Summer Flake sounds like the bitchy high school cheerleader in an American teen movie, but in reality they are the name given to Adelaide girl Stephanie Crase and her band. After kicking around the South Australian capital for a few years and releasing a couple of EPs, Crase launched her debut album You Can Have It All earlier this month through Sydney label Rice Is Nice. Summer Flake’s sound is instantly likeable, a combination of crooning female vocals (not dissimilar to Best Coast‘s Bethany Cosentino) with slow, fuzzy guitar work from her band, and lyrics that make you feel as though you’re reading someone’s personal diary.

summer flake - you can have it all

It’s unclear whether or not the title You Can Have It All is partly a nod at her playing every instrument here, from bass and drums to acoustic and electric guitars. But by assembling an entire band for herself from herself – in contrast to the more solo-sounding two EPs before this – Crase turns her brooding, introspective tangents into both surprising musical lushness and a communion of competing emotions, no matter how rough around the edges – Mess + Noise

Summer Flake are playing a series of nationwide shows to celebrate their debut. If you’re in Sydney, you can catch them playing at the Red Rattler in November as part of the epic Sound Summit 2013 line-up. Other tour dates are as follows:
