PREMIERE: Ani Lou unveils her hauntingly beautiful new single Godspeed

There’s something hauntingly beautiful about Ani Lou. Her music is angelically ambient. Her video clips are painstakingly nostalgic. Her entire being, celestial. Godspeed, her first single of 2018, combines all the best parts of her performative presence into a neat little package, and we just can’t get enough.

Ani Lou’s new single Godspeed possesses a rare breed of ethereality that leaves you feeling nostalgic for a time and place you’ve never been.

Godspeed was recorded with Zarven Kara at Reel to Reel Studios in Hobart. The track features Ani Lou (real name Kate Southorn) on lead guitar, synth and vocals, Zarven Kara on bass, Lachlan Philips on guitar, Timothy Stoneman on drums and Larry Salzman on percussion.

The track co-produced and co-mixed by Southorn and Phillips and was mastered by Heba Kadry, who has worked with the likes of Björk, Slowdive, Beach House and John Maus. It is the first of a number of new Ani Lou tracks which fall into the dream-pop genre, inspired by 80’s and 90’s synth lines and layered with celestial vocals and shoegaze-esque effected guitar melodies.

As Ani Lou herself described, “Godspeed is me kind-of metaphorically turning to the sky and asking in my hopelessly-romantic way, ‘what do you need me to do to be well and happy?’ as though someone might listen, as though there’s a way to gain ‘control’ over a life. But it’s also a ‘well, heck, if nobody’s controlling this thing, we’ve got this’.”

Godspeed is the first track since the artist released her EP Eralda back in 2017. The EP received critical acclaim and has been a favourite on airways nation-wide. She has won support slots alongside the likes of Ali Barter, Husky and Nai Palm, and is omnipresent in the Hobartian music scene.

Catch Ani Lou playing early next month alongside Philomath at their album launch at Fern Tree Arts Hall, just outside of Hobart. For more details on the event, head over to the Facebook page.
