Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D City’ is now the longest-charting hip-hop album ever

Kendrick Lamar‘s second studio album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City has now become the longest-charting hip-hop album in the US Billboard 200.

Spending 400 weeks in the illustrious chart, this week, Lamar’s breakout release has landed exactly in the middle, at no. 100.

Kendrick Lamar hits hip-hop historic heights with Good Kid, M.A.A.D City charting in Billboard 200 for 400th week.

The album featured three top 40 hits, Poetic Justice, featuring hip-hop icon DrakeSwimming Pools (Drank), and Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe, all tracks that propelled Lamar to hip-hop superstardom.

While Lamar was already well known in the hip-hop genre Good Kid, M.A.A.D City pushed the young rapper into the mainstream, with the album working its way to the second spot on the Billboard 200. The LP lead to Lamar earning seven Grammy nominations the following year, while the album earned Platinum status in Australia.

Only one hip-hop album has seen similar success as Lamar’s second project, with Eminem’s Curtain Call: The Hits approaching 500 weeks in the Billboard 200. However, being a compilation album, an asterisk can be placed on that achievement.

Lamar followed Good Kid, M.A.A.A City with critically acclaimed albums such as 2015’s To Pimp A Butterfly and 2017’s DAMN, while also featuring on the Black Panther soundtrack, which he also produced.

However, two years on from the soundtrack’s release, fans are clamouring for more from the Compton rapper as they eagerly await new music news.

While such news has been scarce, TDE boss Anthony Tiffith offered somewhat of an update on new music during an Instagram Live session in May where he said, “Stay patient. King Kendrick will return soon.”

Kendrick Lamar was due to tour the UK and Europe headlining dates at Glastonbury Festival and London’s BST Hyde Park before those festivals were cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, if his latest achievement is anything to go by, Lamar is still in the hearts and minds of hip-hop fans everywhere.
