Laurina Sue explores optimism and liberation on her new single Dark Side

Laurina Sue’s new single Dark Side explores awakening, and venturing to the ‘dark’ side of being human; the side that makes you feel alive when you find the courage to take risks and try new things.

The song marks the start of a solo project from the Fremantle artist, after years playing local gigs and working as a session musician.

Dark Side is an upbeat, spirited song about venturing to the other side of your personality, and discovering that taking risks is liberating, energising and inspiring.

Recorded near the sunny shores of Fremantle, Laurina Sue writes and produces her own songs on top of singing and playing various instruments herself – and she does a damn great job of it too.

Speaking about the song, the artist shared:

“The lyrics represent an existential awakening for me… the dark side isn’t necessarily dark or weird, its more exciting, uplifting and a touch mysterious… its all about constant momentum and that feeling of liberation when you take the bull by the horns.”

You can definitely hear the love of experimenting in Dark Side. The track initially sounds like an electronic song as it opens with a backward-played sample, before starting into a mid-tempo drum beat and then propelling head first into the opening verse with vocals that sound a cross between like Shania Twain and Isabella Manfredi from The Preatures.

Her unusual style has earned Sue props from Tim Van Der Kuil, Adele’s music manager, who has said the musician’s music is “brilliantly quirky and totally original.”

Dark Side is available now on all streaming platforms.
