Nicky Minus, the spitting, the hellfire and the bigger picture

Our friend Nicky Minus has been copping a huge amount of flack. While we don’t condone spitting in someone’s face there’s a wider situation going on that needs to be championed.

The incident didn’t come out of a vacuum nor is this is not an action that Nicky has made a habit of. None of this is done in an effort to vindicate the action of the spit but to understand the pain and frustration of an individual and a community.

Minus’ anger has come out of the continued political and emotional assault that has been directed to an entire community of people by those holding substantial political and judicial powers. She was acting out of a collective rage and pain for those who feel they have been reduced to a voiceless mass, striped of their democratic right to vote and be heard.

What is also vile and not condonable in itself is the extreme aggression that Minus has received over social media. The comments of her being sexist, violent and misogynistic have steam rolled into outright abuse. The thousands of comments proposing her personal harm are unacceptable.

Nicky Minus being an artist that has been pushing buttons with her art has been painted as an ex-student zealot. From our vantage point she is a bold, intelligent and exceptionally hard working artist who has been shouldering consistent and systemic assault and she snapped.

Over the years we have known her to be a kind, thoughtful, powerfully empathetic person who has put herself on the line for those she feels have been utterly marginalised. She has used her skills and intelligence to try and move boulders for others.
