Titanic and Star Trek star David Warner dies aged 80

David Warner, known best for achieving great depths of feeling as an actor, on both the boards and the screen, passed away at 80.

The family of the Star Trek actor shared “with an overwhelmingly heavy heart” that their beloved David, a doting father and loving partner, died of a cancer-related illness on Monday, surrounded by family at Denville Hall – a care home for retirees from the entertainment industry.

David was an exceptional actor, embodying a naturally humble, attentive, and thoughtful demeanor in all of his characters. Given he took on a lot of villanesque roles, in my mind, he would have been the ultimate Alfred to Bruce Wayne’s Batman, if the role had come his way.

Warner is perhaps best known for playing Billy Zane’s crafty assistant Spicer Lovejoy in Titanic. Played to perfection, a little deferentail, and a little mean, but with a whole lot of depth. Although for all the Trekkie fans out there, will no doubt covet his stints as St. John Talbot in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Gorkon in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Gul Madred in the Star Trek: The Next Generation hold a special place for fans. Warner’s memorable and iconic turn as photojournalist Keith Jennings in 1976 horror film The Omen is also a stand-out.

Warners family has paid tribute to the “kind-hearted, generous and compassionate” dad. With partner Lisa writing a tender and heartbreaking message: “Goodnight sweet prince. May flights of angels… Heartbroken.”

His family said in a statement shared via the sun “It is with an overwhelmingly heavy heart that we share the news of the death of the actor David Warner (at the age of nearly 81), from a cancer-related illness, in the early hours of July 24 at Denville Hall.

Over the past 18 months, he approached his diagnosis with characteristic grace and dignity. For 60 years he was a well-respected stage, television, voice and film actor.” Warners family added: “He will be missed hugely by us, his family and friends, and remembered as a kind-hearted, generous and compassionate man, partner and father whose legacy of extraordinary work has touched the lives of so many over the years. We are heartbroken. He will be missed.”
