Sydney WorldPride create giant human Progress Flag at Opera House

To celebrate Sydney’s 44th Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, nearly 1,000 Aussies created a giant human Progress Flag outside Opera House.

On Friday, around 1,000 Aussies gathered on the steps of Sydney Opera House to create a giant human Progress Flag. The colourful showcase happened in honour of the 44th anniversary of the first Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras to take place in Sydney.

It was also a welcome symbol to the world, as Australia prepares to host WorldPride in 2023. The 17-day festival, which reportedly has a predicted attendance of 500,000, will be an epic celebration of our nation’s incredible LGBTQIA+ community. It will be celebrated across 300 events which are set to take place in the City of Sydney.

The festival will also host the highly-anticipated return of Oxford Street’s Mardi Gras Parade, which we’ve all been missing for three years! Sydney’s WorldPride celebration of 2023 will be kicking off on February 17, and carrying on through till March 5. Tickets for this long-awaited festival will be available to purchase on July 15, but earlybird pre-sales can be accessed on July 11.

Created in 2018 by non-binary artist, Daniel Quasar, the Progress Pride Flag aims to promote more inclusivity of the diverse identity span in the queer community. The brown and black stripes represent people of colour; the baby blue, pink and white colours are derived from the trans flag; and the traditional colours of the rainbow flag are also included.
