NSW has officially hit 90 per cent fully vaccinated

90% of the eligible population in NSW is now fully vaccinated, reaching the milestone over two weeks earlier than originally forecast.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard confirmed the state had reached the 90 per cent mark on Tuesday afternoon, calling it an “amazing” response by the NSW community.

“In keeping yourself safe, you’re also keeping your family, your friends and your community safe and of course, getting us back to the way of life that we all hungered for for so long,” he said.

Premier Dominic Perrottet also confirmed the news in social media posts asking for residents to “give it that final push” towards 95%.

“Every extra vaccinated person strengthens our reopening, protects the vulnerable and gets us closer to the magic 95% – when even more restrictions ease,” he said.

NSW Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant says “it’s pleasing to see high rates of vaccination continue to inch upwards” as the state sets its sights on a 95 per cent full vaccination target.

“Every skerrick of scientific evidence supports the role of vaccines in keeping people safe”, she said, while also reminding people that they are not 100 per cent effective.

“You still need to get tested if you’ve got COVID symptoms and it is important that everyone continues to get tested,” Chant said.

Australia passed the 80 per cent fully vaccinated milestone on the weekend with NSW sitting only behind the ACT in vaccination rates, where more than 95 per cent of people have had both doses.

Unvaccinated residents in NSW will still have to wait until December 15, or when the state reaches a 95 per cent double-vaccination, to enjoy greater freedoms.

New South Wales recorded 216 new local cases from 94,804 tests and three deaths in the 24 hours before 8 pm on Tuesday.

There are 235 people in hospital, with 41 in intensive care and 17 on ventilators.

The total COVID-19 death toll in NSW currently stands at 607.
