The final two days of the Commonwealth Games, have seen Australia achieve its 1000th Commonwealth Games gold medal, and will see the official handover for the 2026 games be passed onto Victoria, Australia.
Australia marks its 1000th Commonwealth Games gold medal, and the official handover sees four elders from the traditional owners Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung, Wadawurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung and Gunaikurnai invite the Commonwealth Games to their Victorian lands in 2026.
A tough netball match over the weekend saw Australia win its seventh Gold medal, making it the national record of 1000 gold medal wins in total for Australia since the game’s incarnation in 1930.
The English were still coming to terms with the brutal elimination by New Zealand Silver Ferns for the Bronze in the semi-final, took to loudly supporting Jamaica, using cheering and booing as tactics to take the Australian netballers off their game. But sticks and stones England, sticks and stones because the Diamonds went on to beat Jamaica in a 55-51 victory.
The Medal Tally has Australia taking home the lead with an impressive 66 Gold, 55 Silver, and 52 Bronze, with a total of 174 medals.
Followed by England, with 55 Gold, 59 Silver, and 52 Bronze, with a total of 166 medals.
Canada came in third, with a tally of 26 Gold, 31 Silver, and 34 Bronze, equalling 91 medals, and New Zealand a coming in fourth with 19 Gold, 12 Silver, and 17 Bronze, totaling 48 medals.
The official handover at the closing ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday morning when Birmingham will officially pass the flag to the Governor of Victoria, Linda Dessau. Accompanying the four elders, are rap musician Baker Boy, Vanessa Amorosi, and Geelong’s singer-songwriter Taylor Henderson.
