Starburst lollies will disappear from Aussie shelves forever

Starburst has been discontinued in Australia. Confectionary company, Mars Wrigley, shared the news on TikTok.

Sad news for Starburst lovers out there (a.k.a. literally all of us)! If you’ve been struggling to find your favourite bag of treats in lolly aisles across the country recently, there’s a reason. American confectionary giant, Mars Wrigley has decided to cut us off completely, like absolute savages.

“After reviewing all options, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue the brand in Australia from June 2022,” they wrote in response to a video posted by Nariman Dein, a Sydney-based TikTok creator who was venting about her failed mission to locate any Starburst lollies across the supermarkets she visited.

“These were the best and I can’t find them anywhere,” explained Nariman. “And I’m having some conspiracy theory — did they just stop selling them and no-one noticed?”

As it turns out, there’s no conspiracy here. Nariman was right, and our fave Starburst chewies are about to disappear indefinitely. But why the fuck is this happening? Well, according to a Mars Wrigley spokesperson’s response to her TikTok video, it’s got a lot to do with escalating costs and supply chain issues.

“Our Starburst products are imported from Europe and, like many businesses that are importing products from overseas, the brand has been exposed to supply chain difficulties and rising cost pressures over the last two years,” they said. “After reviewing all options, we’ve made the difficult decision to discontinue the brand in Australia from June 2022.”

Well, there you have it. Bye-bye, Starburst. Let’s just hope the supermarket fights that ensue in the coming days over the last few bags of these beloved lollies don’t cause any serious injuries!
