This Friday September 20, thousands of students, teachers and other workers will be gathering all over the world for what is set to be the largest international climate strike to date.
Spearheaded by the student-run organisation School Strike 4 Climate (SS4C), strikers are urging schools, unions and businesses alike to call out the inadequacies of the nation’s leaders in addressing the international climate crisis at hand.
This Friday marks the world’s largest ever Climate Strike. If you’re in Australia, here’s how you can play your part in the historic protest.
The strike is a follow-up to the first climate strike which took place in March this year, and is a direct response to imminent fossil fuel and mining projects across Australia, namely Adani’s Coal Mine. Strikers will be marching in demand that the following key objectives be met:
- No new coal, oil and gas projects, including the Adani mine
- 100% renewable energy generation and exports by 2030
- Fund a just transition and job creation for all fossil-fuel workers and communities
But where do I go? What can I do? How can I do it? All great questions. Each Australian capital city is hosting a strike between 11am and 2pm local times, plus an absolute ton of regional cities and towns are taking part. Check where your closest strike is on the SS4C website.
Also listed on the Resources section of the website are a variety of ways through which you can further the reach of your climate activism, such as engaging in community based awareness projects.
- Spread the word: Inform your neighbours, friends, family, and local businesses of the strike and encourage them to take the day off or close their shops for the day.
- Send a letter using SS4C’s template: A) to your boss explaining why you’re taking the day off and B) to your local MP to let them know how pissed off you are that the government are aren’t doing their bit to protect our precious ecosystems!
- Make awesome, funky, eye-catching posters and banners: List your concerns! Practice your rhymes and slogans, a great sign is always memorable.
- Bring your crew: As the strike’s call to action states, ‘Everyone invited, everyone needed.’
