Rice Is Nice Turns 5

Birthdays! Sydney indie label Rice Is Nice who have brought you some pretty wonderful stuff over the years (Richard In Your Mind, Summer Flake, Straight Arrows and Seekae’s breakthrough releases, etc.) are celebrating the big 5 at the Roller Den in Erskineville to cap off this long weekend.

Sunday the 27th will see labelmates old and new share the relatively new stage underneath the Imperial Hotel in celebration of the momentous occasion. Old mate SPOD will be pumping out his 00’s brand of kitsch electronica (aka. Vapourwave before it was cool) alongside the ineffably euro-chic Donny Benet, while Straight Arrows and Shatterbrain will be filling out the loud, hardcore component of the night with their own unique takes on living the punk lifestyle.

Who: Summer Flake, Straight Arrows + more

When: Sun 27th April

Why: A label known for putting on rad shows at Sydney’s best new venue

RIYM and Phonographics will take you back to the good old days, whenever that might be – it doesn’t really matter anymore, with their renditions and rehashing of some of the iconic sounds of guitar music from the 20th century. Lastly, Summer Flake is up here from Adelaide, getting us all a little worked up about the 90’s with her grungy, pavementy, gazy jaguar guitar tunes. What a lineup!

Rice Is Nice have a reputation for signing artists that put on awesome live shows, RIYM and SPOD being two such artists who have in the past used costumes, glitter, crazy props and circus shop offcuts to exhibit some pretty nutty on stage happenings. If there is ever an opportunity for the dudes at Rice to get nuts with their stage show, this is it. I’d bring a rain poncho just incase.

The Roller Den is just underneath the Imperial Hotel and is literally one of the nicest basement venues I’ve been to in a long time. With a sound system on the level of Oxford Arts and a chic nightclub vibe unlike any live music venue I’ve ever been to in Sydney, this show on Sunday is a perfect opportunity to check it out if you haven’t already.

Tickets are an incredibly reasonable $10 and doors open at 3:00pm, which gives you plenty of time to get hairy before Straight Arrows.
