Red Room Poetry brings us the biggest month in the poetry calendar. Sure, we could wax lyrical about how much we love poetry till we draw our last breath, but instead, we will present you with the facts because there is a lot going on. So set to it and make sure to add it to your diary for August!
Synonymous with poetry, Red Room has been championing Australian poetry for over 19 years. Launched in 2021, Poetry Month (1-31 August) is here again to bring some much-needed melodic depth and beauty to our lives, and lucky for u,s Red Room Poetry has made poetry more accessible than ever.
Poetry Month is set to feature a stellar line-up of poetic celebrations and events to showcase Australia’s finest poets. From daily poems, online workshops, prizes, and residencies, expect the finest of odes from fully seasoned laureates, to the new generation of sonneteers, there’s a haiku, verse, rhyme, or ballad to fit everyone.
Poetry Month has been kicked off to perfection with #30in30 by cultural historian, essayist, and novelist Maria Tumarkin and her #PoetryMonth commissioned poem, War and Peace.
This year, Poetry Ambassadors include the viral content creator and Olympic medallist, Bronte Campbell; best-selling poet, Courtney Peppernell; acclaimed author, Sisonke Msimang; much-loved broadcaster and journalist, Daniel Browning and writer and stand-up comedian, Nina Oyama.
The National Poetry Month Gala is being held on the 12th Of August at the Australian Chamber Orchestra in Walsh Bay, and is set to showcase Australia’s best contemporary poets, with Eunice Andrada, Kirli Saunders, Jacqui Malins, and Scott-Patrick Mitchell alongside PM Literary Award for Poetry winners Omar Sakr and Sarah Holland-Batt, and the host of ABC’s The Art Show Daniel Browning. Hosted by Alex Lee, the night also features comedians and actors including Nat’s What I Reckon, Sacha Horler, and Nina Oyama reading their favorite Australian poems, as well as a special musical performance by Ben Salter.
