“Sadness sits side-by-side with humour”: The Reductors reveal their raw new sound with a killer double release

Perth based, part post-punk, part retro outfit, The Reductors have just dropped an epic double release Practical Girl /Tremors, debuting a fresh new sound and more energy than ever.

The Reductors have returned with the same musical finesse and masterful lyricism that have previously cemented them as one of the best and most loved acts on the West Coast, drawing similarities to iconic acts like The Velvet Underground, The Smiths and The Kinks.

The Reductors double release Practical Girl / Tremor is a raw and energetic take on their familiar post-punk sentiments, satirical social commentary and catchy, melodic hooks.

Frontman and guitarist Luke Nixon seems to possess the incredible ability to take an often stigmatised social issue and pair it with witty humour, unmatched lyricism, and a whole lot of perspective to things often left unspoken.

“Through Nixon’s beautifully crafted lyrics, the band explores themes of social isolation, rejection, self-doubt and anxiety, set against a rich canvas of bleak – and sometimes playful – imagery.”

Taking a step back from their more structured approach with their 2017 release Caboose, Practical Girl / Tremor is edgy, abrasively textured and hones in on very real, honest experiences of the everyday.

“We made a conscious decision to make our sound more raw than it has previously been and enhanced that by doing more live tracking and using fewer takes.”

“Caboose was heavily structured and precisely edited, and had recognisable retro influences, to create an undercurrent of civility, familiarity, and nostalgia. It was our way of exploring the isolating and alienating effect of our society’s rules, norms and institutions.”

“The new recordings strip back those tenets and structures as the band delves into the individual psyche to explore how our own emotional mechanisms and experiences shape our perceptions of the world.”

Nixon’s raw lyrics cover, remorse, criticism and personal reflection, while the accompaniment of fellow band mates, guitarist Aidan Gordon, bassist Gareth Bevan and drummer Erin Gordon, fill the space with killer guitar solos, punchy percussion and unforgettable melodic hooks.
