Sam Buckingham – I’m A Bird

sam buckingham

Sam Buckingham is an Australian girl who has a flare for acoustic, sweet and folky songwriting. Her sound and penchant for lyrical story-telling conjures up comparisons to Laura Marling, but with a uniquely Australian edge that sets her apart from her contemporaries. She’s toured with some of Australia’s most loved artists, from Angus & Julia Stone, to Lior, Matt Corby and Megan Washington, meaning she’s no stranger to commercial shows and large-scale audiences. However, Buckingham has remained seriously grounded, making a name for herself through her three national Home Concert tours- which saw her play shows in over 100 of her dearest fans’ living-rooms. Following her 2012 EP, Fragile Heart, she has recently released her first album, I’m A Bird– a collection of raw and honest songs that replay in your mind as if on repeat.

The album does see-saw as Buckingham oscillates between sweet and sad. But it’s a genuine tale of adventures had and knowledge gained during Buckingham’s three-year traipse across Europe – and life (particularly while travelling) is anything but a linear storybook. Play I’m A Bird after a tiring day; put your feet up and relax your aching brow, let your mind drift upon the current of Buckingham’s honey-sweet sound and she’ll take you on a journey home – The Music

With so much inflation of ego in creative industries, its really nice to stumble across an artist who presents as so utterly free from it. She’s currently touring nationally on I’m A Bird, playing the album from start to finish for her fans. This is an artist who truly understands the importance of the relationship between the creator and the audience, with the production of her debut album funded in-part by her fans. Her sound is intimate, as if she’s singing to you only.

If Regina Spektor and Missy Higgins had a child it would have the eccentric vocals of Sam Buckingham. The quirky songstress’s sweet pop sound and strong Aussie accent makes I’m a Bird a chilled soundtrack for a lazy afternoon… Beautifully direct and emotional, I’m a Bird is a modern folk collection with a slow tempo and intimate feel conveying Buckingham’s acoustic take on love songs – SMH

Catch Sam Buckingham playing in your neighbours’ living-room before she hits the big-time!
