islnd band

A few months ago we introduced Sydney producer ISLND, who makes upbeat electronic tunes and performs with a live three piece band who switch up between playing sample pads, synthesisers, drums, guitar and bass. Ahead of his upcoming debut EP due to be released in early 2014, the band have been bringing their eclectic mix of beats and David Attenborough samples to staple Sydney party venue The World Bar. Tonight is the last installment of their three month residency with MUM and is set to be their biggest show yet.

Since we last spoke to ISLND, the producer has been performing el solo in support of international heavyweights, including Stanton Warriors and Brookes Brothers and will be supporting Canberra house music duo The Aston Shuffle on their upcoming live tour at The Standard in March next year. The live show has also been tweaked, most notably with the addition of Cal Roberts AKA Kyphosis on vocals to round out the unique performance style of the electronic band.

Anyone in Sydney should be familiar with The World Bar – it’s reputation as one of the only decent venues in the city’s notoriously violent and shadily criminal Kings Cross district has stood the test of time, promoting a four room no-bullshit party atmosphere 7 days a week for as long as I can remember and on Fridays providing a platform for up and coming live acts to play in an intimate club atmosphere. It’s not exactly underground, the patrons are generally young and loud and the whole bar has a strange carpety smell, but the bands are generally well chosen and the bar offers $5 beers and $12 cocktails served in teapots – but you Sydneysiders already knew this didn’t you? Get there before 10pm for free entry, or jump on the guestlist for a mere $10 cover charge after 10. So many 10’s.

It’s going to be a primarily electronic vibe playing alongside ISLND tonight (where are the indie jams? Where are the Interpol cover bands? Has the world moved on from 2006 already?), so be sure to catch Purple Sneakers DJ’s, Platform 19 and The Tongue throughout your no doubt hazy Friday night pushing through crowds of students to get a round of those $5 Tecates.
