Shows – Pond

We loved Hobo Rocket. On their fifth album, Pond found themselves sounding modern and raw, further distancing themselves from their ties to the ‘serious’ project of their friends in Tame Impala. The noisy, heavy singalong choruses that were bubbling under the surface of their 2012 release, Beard, Wives & Denim burst out from the crust of the Earth on Hobo Rocket in a magnificent display of whirling organs and fat drum rolls.

Brisbanites will be lucky enough to catch Nick Allbrook and co. at The Zoo this Saturday (Sat 14 Dec 2013) alongside tour buddies Doctopus and Peter Bibby (AKA P. Bibby). Brisbane’s longest standing nightclub / live music venue, The Zoo has played host to most of the decent international acts that make their way out to Australia.

Doctopus are a dirty, rollicking rock and roll band with as many nods to 60’s garage as to mid 70’s prog and psychedelia. Simple, no nonsense and completely unpretentious with their guitar tones, the lo-fi Perthians put on a live show worth getting up to the front of the stage early for. Peter Bibby on the other hand started his musical career after quitting his job twice  and becoming a busker, but is nowhere near your average acoustic singer songwriter (thank the heavens). He now sings ballads about goon sacks, sharing ciggies and crashing on couches in an Australian drawl that’s equally charming and grating at the same time. All in all, it’s a lineup worth seeing from start to finish and definitely takes the Pond approach to having fun while also making great tunes.
