Sunday Avenue chat their epic new video for Melted Hearts

If you haven’t already checked out Sunday Avenue’s new video for Melted Hearts, stop what you’re doing and go watch it now. Brimming with dynamic instrumentation and heartfelt lyricism, we’ve had the track itself spinning on repeat since we first laid ears on it.

So fresh off the new clips release, we caught up with the band to chat all about it, their diverse music tastes, and what the future holds.

Hot off the release of their new video for Melted Hearts, we caught up with Centra Coast band Sunday Avenue for a chat.

HAPPY: Hey, how’s it going? What are you up to at the moment?

SUNDAY AVENUE: Great, thanks! It’s actually just loads and loads of band stuff really! We just got to release a new music video for Melted Hearts which was super fun to create, but apart from that just a lot of jamming, gigging, writing and hanging out together.

HAPPY: We’ve been loving the new EP! How does it feel having the tracks out there in the world?

SUNDAY AVENUE: Well thanks heaps for checking it out, it honestly feels so good to have it out. This is our first release so that means it’s our first big step towards working out what we’d like our music to sound like and what kind of experience we want to create for people. So exploring all of that was fun for us. When we released the EP we were wondering if we would be able to pull off some little headline shows of our own, which we had never done before… It was pretty scary to be honest, having to organise venues, bands etc and promote everything ourselves. We literally had no idea where to start but after we had a few conversations about it together as a band we started to realise that it might not actually be that far out of reach! So long story short, we took a leap of faith and got the shows together and it was awesome! We got to meet some new fans and that made the whole thing totally worth it.

HAPPY: You’ve just dropped a new music video for Melted Hearts… it’s great! Could you walk us through how this came together? Who was involved?

SUNDAY AVENUE: The interesting thing about that video is it was actually filmed inside one of our houses. It’s actually a new kitchen that hadn’t had any of the benches and cupboards put in yet hahaha. We just thought “wow that would be a great space to make a music video,” so we painted it black, decorated, threw in some smoke and voila!! We were lucky enough to get the amazing Jye Currie working behind the camera. He is a friend and film producer we met through the University of Newcastle, he helped us pull the whole clip together!

HAPPY: Could you tell us a bit about the track?

SUNDAY AVENUE: This song was the first song that was written for the EP. The first half of the song was something that I had from when I was about 16 actually, it sounded much more like a folksy sort of Ed Sheeran love song. But once the band started developing, Melted Hearts really grew into a new beast and that entire heavy second half of the song was born. We love the idea of starting a song one way but finishing it in a completely different style, it sort of pushes some genre boundaries and keeps it interesting for us, so that’s why it’s one of our favourite tracks from the EP!

HAPPY: You guys have only been putting out music for a short while, but it feels like you’re really confident in your sound and direction. How did the band come together?

SUNDAY AVENUE: Even though Sunday Avenue has only existed for just under 2 years now, we have always been good mates because we went through high school together. We always used to skip our classes (sorry mum) just so we could get into the school music rooms and jam out. It was never anything serious but it definitely helped us understand each other and develop a style together before the band was even a thing! So in a way, we basically learnt our instruments together when we were young, and that really glues us together more than anything.

HAPPY: Did you land on your current sound pretty easily? Or did it take a while to iron out?

SUNDAY AVENUE: With this EP, in particular, our sound was influenced heavily from playing live and interacting with each other on stage, so we weren’t shy to keep the songs sounding energetic and a little rough around the edges for the pop style that it is. I know it sounds cliché but as artists, we are always discovering new territories we are yet to explore and new ways to express ourselves, so our sound is always changing and evolving with the things we learn and the music we consume.

HAPPY: What kinds of stuff are you all listening to at the moment?

SUNDAY AVENUE: We actually vary what we listen to so much it’s ridiculous. At the moment, the new 1975 album, the new Slipknot album, the new Jon Bellion album, Parcels, Twenty One Pilots, 5SOS, there’s a lot there! We like to switch it up and surprise each other with the AUX cord a lot. Lately, it’s ABBA… who knows what’s next.

HAPPY: What’s next for Sunday Avenue? Any other plans in the works?

SUNDAY AVENUE: As always, we are attempting to keep ourselves about 379 steps ahead. So we can indeed confirm we are already working on a new project. I’m not gonna spoil anything because the band will actually kill me, but I can say it’s very exciting times ahead and we absolutely can’t wait!

HAPPY: Cheers for the chat!

SUNDAY AVENUE: It was a pleasure, thanks so much for having us!
