Fiona Apple post emotional video in response to Roe v. Wade

Pioneer songwriter and artist Fiona Apple has spoken out about the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

Posting a roughly 3-minute video, Fiona Apple expressed her reaction to the result and what such a result could mean for America as a whole.

Halfway through the video, the singer composed herself after succumbing to an emotional response to the shock of the decision. She said: “I’m not telling anyone else what to do, obviously, I’m just here, expressing myself.”

Last week, the US Supreme Court made the decision to overturn the landmark abortion ruling named: Roe v. Wade. This means abortion will no longer be protected as a federal right in the US for the first time since 1973, and each state will be able to decide individually whether to restrict or ban abortion.

Alabama and Arkansas have already made it illegal. It was signed into law on the same day as the ruling was overturned. Juxtaposed with that were California, Washington and Oregon which have repeatedly emphasised that nothing will change.

Fiona Apple’s comments mirror that of many, women and men. She said: “We have to talk about how we feel about this, how unacceptable this is, have to keep expressing ourselves because this is all about control. You know that.”

She continued: “It’s about control. That’s what it’s about. It’s about control, just like a sexual assault is about control. That’s why this feels like a sexual assault, ’cause peoples hands and bodies and… in our bodies that don’t belong there, that we don’t want.”

Joining Apple are other artists voicing their concern and condemnation. These include Taylor SwiftPearl JamCharli XCX, Maggie Rogers, Green DayFinneasYungbludAlicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar and Madonna.
