The journey behind Jimmi Carr’s new double A-side single and video clip

Jimmi Carr released a video for his new single Free Right Now a couple of weeks ago and it’s been receiving plenty of attention, although it was only chosen as the subject of a video clip at the last minute.

The song is part of the double A-side single Free Right Now/Moving Target, which was released digitally in December. The other single, Moving Target was the original choice to be the lead out single and video clip.

Over the past number of months, Blue Mountains-based singer-songwriter Jimmi Carr has released a double A-side single and a music video. Here’s how it all happened.

Jimmi changed his mind about which song to lead with and make a clip for after Free Right Now was featured on Triple J’s ‘Roots n All’ program. This was a welcome and somewhat unexpected development and came in conjunction with a glowing review for the track by the host of ‘Roots n All’, Nkechi Anele. She wrote:

“[Free Right Now] brought a real smile to my face and made my morning as I put this on repeat. The way this song saunters along is fantastic. Rhythmically so exciting and fun the whole thing comes together so masterfully. Bravo!” – 4 and a half stars.

The single also received widespread airplay on other stations, including Sydney’s FBI radio.  Due to the positive response, Jimmi decided that Free Right Now’s uplifting themes of letting go and finding hope could potentially have a universal appeal.

Moving Target, the other single, was also released as part of the charity album Out of the Dark, which is a compilation featuring musicians from Lithgow and the Blue Mountains and raising money for suicide prevention programs in the local area. Jimmi was approached by the Out of the Dark collective about being involved and chose Moving Target to be included.

The song was already recorded for the forthcoming new Jimmi Carr band album. Jimmi’s involvement with Out of the Dark inspired him to release Moving Target as a single ahead of the new album and to finish the two other tracks that are part of the single release.

Moving Target looks at the theme of struggling with mental health issues and diagnosis when people around you don’t necessarily understand what the problem is or even believe there really is a problem. FBI Radio featured Moving Target just a couple of days after its release on their alt-county/roots show In the Pines.
