The Night run us through the gear behind their new album Question Everything

When we first came across The Night’s latest album Question Everything, we were immediately drawn into their immersive and infectious sounds.

So we caught up with the band for an extensive run-down on the gear that helped shape their music.

Fresh off the release of their new album Question Everything, we caught up with Sydney outfit The Night to get the low-down on the gear behind their incredibly immersive music.

Teenage Engineering OP-1

This tiny little portable digital synth was used for both the transitional tracks on the album, linking various areas of the project together. It was also used when the band toured to Melbourne etc.

Some great faux analog sounds and some awesome live looping/recording features. Great percussion sounds also and infinitely tweakable.

Danelectro Spring King

A big, all-analog spring reverb tank in a guitar pedal format. A recent addition to the Night’s live sound- used for explosions of rattling, metallic reverb bursts at dramatic points in the live set. A favourite that is used by one of our two ambient soundscapists, Sam Bannerman.

Boss FB-2

A criminally underrated pedal. Great EQ and tone shaping functionality with the addition of the most convincing feedback generation available. Used at the end of title track Question Everything for crazy feedback nonsense etc

Arion SCH-Z (EWS modded) Chorus Pedal

It looks like a cheap plastic 80’s knock off brand. But it sounds like a choir of angels. Possibly the biggest most three-dimensional reverb pedal ever and made even greater thanks to the EWS mods.

A favourite used by our resident rock-god Jordan teal. The Night has some big 80’s influences and this pedal helps nail the sound.

Nissan Patrol 2003

Solid, reliable, comfy. We love it. Got us to Melbourne and back. Countless late night gigs. A big part of the band (potentially our seventh member). Its not out of the ordinary to see Jordan standing on the roof unloading gear and being a nuisance.

Nord Stage 2

Nord is popular among synth/keyboard players because of its prestige, but I’d argue that not everyone who owns one of these knows its true potential. Our player Pete knows this inside and out and makes true use of its extensive features.

He brings this with him to every gig and uses it to make our live show sound vibrant and full by layering and combining sounds.

Hagstrom Viking 2 Trem

Picked one of these up a few years ago second hand. It wasn’t in great condition and I added an aftermarket trem to it without much professional knowledge of how to do so correctly other than the assistance of youtube.

I later replaced it with a newer model with a factory fitted trem, and love the tone and feel of it as a multi-genre guitar. It’s a Swedish design based off a Gibson 335 so it shares some similarities obviously.

The neck is smooth and nice to play on, and I rep Hagstrom whenever I can. The trem bar was used to create some of the crazy sounds you hear on the bridge of the title track on Question Everything.

Danelectro TOD-1

Rumour has it that this overdrive pedal was discontinued because it was a copy of another famous pedal. We don’t know the details exactly but it forms a big part of the rhythm sound of frontman, guitarist/singer Neal Critchley.

Raw, edgy and very natural. Helps him deliver the goods through any type of backline amp we have come across so far.

Gretsch Catalina Club

Our drummer uses this kit with DW hardware and it packs a punch, but also allows room for the subtleties in some of our more discreet sections. He prefers Zildjian cymbals and has a plethora of these that he swaps in and out where necessary.

Question Everything is available now.
