Throwing snow suggests a sort of icy sharp blast, hurtling towards its target with a structural steel determination. Reflective of this is the wintry whoosh of electronic tones and textures created by Throwing Snow, a production of abstract structure, electronic samples and arpeggiated tones interlaced with elements of folk and dubstep. Rather than throwing snow at us (only fun if you’re the one doing the throwing btw), the Bristol-born, now London-based beatmaker instead throws his experimental crackles, pops and weird sounds our way. Tones boldly delves into an array of assorted genres – electronic, ambient, trip-hop, drums and bass, folk and dubstep (combine the two and you get folkstep).
Since debuting in 2007, Tones has put out several numerous acclaimed EPs, launched his own label Snowfall and played a ton of gigs, supporting names like Bonobo, Atoms For Peace and Jon Hopkins. This year saw the release of Mosaic, the multi-faceted producer’s first full length album for new home Houndstooth. Mosaic’s opening track Avarice evokes the surroundings of a barren wasteland covered in a pulsating electronic buzz, with a flickering of violin strings and steady drums.
The Tempest featuring Bucharest vocalist Adda Kaleh, is aptly named, an industrial storm of clanking, bass-laden textures, softened by Kaleh’s melodious vocals. The standout track of the album, As You Fall, is a foreboding yet breathtaking track, where London songstress Py’s vocals are chopped, warped and decelerated, blended into a cacophony of musical styles.
A producer with no limit to his musical talents and capabilities, Ross Tones is slowly climbing his way to the top of the folksteppy, ice-capped mountain that is the music scene. Let’s all (figuratively) throw some snow and listen to Throwing Snow together. Mosaic is out now through Houndstooth.
