SZA, FKA Twigs, Jack Harlow and more named on TIME magazine’s 2022 ‘Next List’

TIME magazine has unveiled its annual list of 100 rising stars from across industries and around the world, naming the likes of SZA, FKA Twigs and Jack Harlow among its most influential musicians.

The list rounds out its musician representation with rock artist Machine Gun Kelly, Brit-pop singer Rina Sawayama and producer Finneas. As is customary for the list, each entrant receives a complimentary blurb written by a fellow celebrity, which this year saw SZA paired with Lizzo, Jimmy Fallon with Jack Harlow and Avril Lavigne with Machine Gun Kelly, among many other famous duos. For her part, Lizzo traced her years-long friendship with the R&B singer, and deemed her debut album Ctrl “a cultural f-cking reset.”

All [SZA] needs is that pen and that voice and her story,” Lizzo wrote, “and she’s going to be with us for a long time.” Fallon, meanwhile, remarked that “it’s been fun to ride with [Harlow],” and likewise said that it “is just the beginning” for the rapper. In her blurb, Lavigne said Machine Gun Kelly has “grown in the most authentic way, starting as a rapper and evolving into one of the biggest rock stars in the world.”

Diversifying the list, TIME elsewhere included a range of film and television faces, with entrants Sydney Sweeney, Keke Palmer and Joe Alwyn receiving praise from fellow actors Maude Apatow, Queen Latifah and Ryan Reynolds, respectively. Sweeney has been enjoying the success of her role in the HBO shows Euphoria and The White Lotus, while Palmer has enjoyed renewed attention following her appearance in Jordan Peele’s Nope

The ‘Next 100’ is an offshoot of TIME magazine’s flagship list, ‘TIME100’, which compiles the world’s most influential figures during a given year. Released in May, this year’s list featured the likes of Zendaya, Mary J. Blige and Vladimir Putin, among a slew of other entrants from diverse fields.
