Vid O’The Week: Airling – Wasted Pilots

Can you hear that? The true sound of summer… people whinging about how the scorching heat is stopping them from enjoying the most out of their much deserved break (uni kids that is). It seems that every effort to survive this heat only acts as a temporary fix, with our decisions actually causing us some regrets – like the trip to the beach which resulted in that lasting burn, like lying in bed all day stuck and alone with our thoughts, making us feel worse than before.

The breezy artist, Airling , has the capacity to satisfy your needs this summer with a sound that has the same impact as aircon on full blast – chills you in an instant and nothing else matters but staying is that moment as long as you can. This artist must just be that long lasting fix you were looking for.

Gracefully drifting through a space of cool breezes, pure oceans and a freed mind, Airling’s deeply alluring musicality is set to soar beyond this debut EP.

Brisbane’s singer-songwriter, Airling, also known as Hannah Shepherd, has a debut EP Love Gracefully, which was produced by Melbourne producer Tom Scary (the moniker for Tom Iansek of Big Scary). The pair began working together after Hannah contributed vocals to Tom’s #1 Dads album. Airling’s soaringly beautiful sound which combines her  graceful and lucid vocals with rich electronica, and explores light and shade lyrically and technically, provides a solid runway for a globetrotting flight for international recognition. Airling’s potential was first highlighted to the world when she opened Splendour in the Grass after winning Triple J Unearthed’s competition 2014.

Directed by Shaun Garland, with its Super 8 footage, Wasted Pilots is about: “The character in the song has lost everything and keeps taking blows completely beyond their control, so that their journey in life is like a plane that’s being flown by ‘wasted pilots’.” Its endearing sense of levitation, launches airborne emotions which fuses with the electronica that densely surrounds it – the destined collisions of the two glisten like the fireworks in the music video. Airling is a dynamic gift to the electronic folk genre with her intense sense of space and weightlessness leaving you breathless and fixed on every beat.

Wasted Pilots music video stars herself and fellow musician Thelma Plum and with the lyrics:“Broken from the head down to the toes, losing everything that you live for, sleeping all the nights with your eyes pinned, swallowing the air when it tastes bitter…fly with wasted pilots, feeling alive but dead inside”, Airling’s track situates itself and you in self-destructive and shattered environment where you are left with three choices: detonation, trepidation or revelation.

Airling’s debut EP Love Gracefully is out now, and each track is just so tragically beautiful you can’t help but have the EP on repeat, searching for the closure that can only be brought about by the next chapter in Airling’s musical journey . If you catch her at Falls Festival you can expect her characteristic beats, samples, delays and all the feelings she brings along with it. Close your eyes and prepare to be lifted by Airling.
