Reviving the classic children’s picture book of Where the Wild Things Are (1963) is audio DJ and visual artist from Sydney, Ego. This timeless tale has been adapted into an animated short, an opera, a feature film and now a visual remix which focuses its attention on a child’s farcical tendency to be quite vicious and animalistic when they demand something. Ego’s video mixtape / audio-visual edit makes the most out of Electric Mantis’ track Flips And Flops, Drips And Drops – appealing to your inner child and club goer at the same time.
In a generation of innovative artists, audio DJ and visual artist Ego is creating next level experiences, manipulating musical and cultural worlds together.
This Where The Wild Things Are AV edit is the first offering from Ego’s Between Dreams video mixtape. Adding vocal samples to the original Electric Mantis’ track, this video mixtape is incredibly colourful with a hue that removes all the shine – playfully adventurous with a strong sense of danger and moral ambiguity about. You can expect to see a fusion of Ego’s audio and visual samples, full of popular culture references ( from current headlining celebrities, to classic movie clips), with his signature trippy and experimental style in the Between Dreams mixtape.
The brilliant thing about this video technique is that despite not everything making sense to the audience, the vast variety of clips and altering of them so that they are more abstract than ever before, gives the audience the freedom to choose what will resonate with them and how.
Ego’s sought after skills has taken him from nightclubs to art galleries, to Falls Festival, Splendour in the Grass and Field Day all around Australia and the world. His repertoire includes collabs with Beni, LDRU and Touch Sensitive, and official video remixes for the likes of The Presets, Lana Del Rey and Clubfeet. Most notably in 2013, Ego worked with Touch Sensitive to create the world’s first instagram sourced music video – check it out, it’s epic – the world if full of wonderful and underrated sounds just waiting to be remixed.
If your screen ever undergoes spasms of visual delays while watching an Ego vid, that is just him working his mind messing magic on you – don’t despair, just let him sway your thoughts and emotions through a mindfield of visual delusion. There is no doubt people will be flocking to learn or witness the ways of this grand master of visual and aural manipulation, deviation and the attainment of ultimate otherly experiences.
With the new video mixtape Between Dreams out sometime this month, be sure to check Ego out on his tour. If you catch Ego at a live show he will be performing his mixtape, plus more – live is always better don’t you think?
