Vid O’The Week: Freeds – Mango Squarez

After watching this music video, you will want to situate yourself on a cliff’s edge overlooking the water.  If blissful smooth rap with a pop flavour is what you’re into, then Melbourne’s hiphop/rapper, Freeds, will fit nicely with this scene that you’ve actualised, or imagined because you’re still stuck in your bedroom daydreaming.

You can either think of Bubble O’Bills, coconuts, mangos, blue waters, and barefoot bush walks and you’ll be there on top of the world with Freeds in an instant, or you can give in to what the song is encouraging you to do and step out the door.

Smooth rapping and singing hiphop artist, Freeds, has a distinct appreciation for a pop sound and youthful desires – music to pump you up and cool you off.

Mango Squarez is off Freeds’ EP Insomnirap, produced by Uncledes. Freeds’ ability to effortlessly interchange in tempo through rap and song, makes things rather exciting and a pleasure to listen to – drawn out and woozy at times and quick and seamless on command. Freeds is also listed on Happy’s Top 10 artists to watch out for in 2015.

Shot in Sydney against an iconic backdrop, the hazy gold and orange hues of beautiful sunrises and sunsets – or if you’re a pessimist – the blinding glare of those summery days, Freeds dances freely to Mango Squarez, a track full of pop culture references. The chorus gives off this Smash Mouth vibe, creating that pop contrast to chill rap – playful, yet serious about the craft of word play. Freeds’ rap ranges from rap to pump you up with adrenaline, to music that will knock you out and remind you to chillax dude.

Other tracks on the EP include the bonus track Walls, which according to his FB: “This song is a strange, metaphorical journey about breaking free from insecurity, doubt and sadness. It’s about the journey toward an island of happiness. It’s about trying to make music that pushes boundaries and breaks walls.”

Illy was on triple j unearthed recently to talk about the best emerging emcees in the country – Freeds featured in that list. Illy said that Freeds track, H.U.G.D.R.U.G, really grabbed his attention and that he saw “the drive that you need to really make it”  in Freeds – check out the audio here, esp at 11 min 42.
