We have some great rising hip hop artists coming out of Australia and the one in this piece is undeniably in that mix. Whether you’ve always listened to this genre or you are a new convert, this music has the power to create assurance, understanding and inspiration – speaking the truth that we are too scared to confess ourselves and reminding people that they really aren’t alone in their battles.
Check out the incredibly uplifting rap sensibility of Marksman Lloyd, whose sophisticated relatability makes him definitely one to watch.
Perth’s hip hop artist, Marksman Lloyd, has been on an upwards slope to success for the past two years – hard work goes a long way. Described by Colosoul magazine as “the new poster boy for educated and progressive hip hop”. With inspirations from artists like Atmosphere, Black Star, Bob Dylan, C.S Lewis, Tupac and Sixto Rodriguez, Marksman’s love of poetry and the seamless ownership of those tongue twisters, asserts his home and rightful place in this genre. According to a quick chat with X-press mag, Marksman’s sound is all about: “Trying to bring the storytelling of the best folk artists from the 60s into the modern day/ futuristic hip hop soundscape full of energy and honesty.”
His latest EP Rewrite the Ending with the singles You Won’t Be The One, Hearts and Silver Magic Ships, has been well received across the airwaves. Performing shows in the U.S and Singapore, Marksman Lloyd has shared the stage with the greats – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Brother Ali, Action Bronson, P-Money and Blue & Exile. He has also supported fellow Australian talents Drapht, Illy and Horrorshow.
After listening to You Won’t Be the One for the first time, you might feel like you’ve heard this from somewhere before – its unmistakably polished sound can match and compete against the best. You Won’t Be the One is an anthemic powerhouse, with acoustic and electronic instrumentation to support the unstoppable rap smith as he lays down those rhymes like he never wants to give up, ever.
The soaring higher male vocals of Whisky Winter brings out the pleasant contrast with Marksman’s masculine and commanding vocal prowess, full of fight and attitude but smooth enough to not intimidate those that knows his amicable intentions. The track channels this unrelenting energy source – the further you get into the track, the more strength you accrue. You may be beaten but you can push through any adversity and emerge as the underdog as long as Marksman Lloyd is standing guard.
In the video you will be exposed to that frustrating choice between forgiveness and holding a grudge. This conflict often gets the better of us and we lose sight of every good that ever happened – we choose to let the unpleasantness fill our mind with a fraught identity because we feel like we deserve it. The painful truth is that we tend to only forgive when the other person has no more fight, and we only surrender when we are already defeated. We make regrettable decisions that haunt us and if second chances were on offer, we could attempt to right our wrongs – this video is full of poignancy and speaks honesty in a gripping manner, so you can’t help but take away meaningful messages.
