What remains of our knowledge of the western world’s most celebrated decade is, I would assume, a pretty biased picture, skewed towards the carefree and the senseless rather than the Vietnam draft and the constant fear of global thermonuclear exchange.
The sixties’ legacy of psychoactive chemicals, free love, cheap petrol and quirky science fiction have lived on in our pop history psyche in the form of flat vinyl discs, decaying super 8 film and heavily embellished stories from your uncle who now owns a farm outside Byron Bay.
We know you clicked through because the title said Babe Rainbow’s Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest. Luckily, you’re in for a pretty amazing Vid O’ The Week.
As though dug out of the musty back shed of that very farm comes the latest video from Rainbow Bay’s own acid casualties The Babe Rainbow. Filmed on a solid gold 24 carat film recorder (Roger Moore Bond styles), the clip for Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest paints the band chilling out and getting up to some serious flower child bullshit before literally painting the band against a pastel cartoonscape, which stylistically lands somewhere between a Monty Python short and Yellow Submarine.
The clip expertly cuts a divide between the vintage visuals of Sam Kristofski‘s direction and editing and the brilliant animation of Dr. D. Foothead, who between them have previously worked with The Ruby Suns, Opossom, The Upbeats, The Jezabels, The Datsuns and Jinja Safari. Oh, and of course the music behind the visuals is pretty damn amazing as well. But you already knew that, didn’t you?
The Babe Rainbow will be embarking on an east coast tour in July to support Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest, stopping off at the dates listed below. Even if you don’t like psych music, it’ll be worth heading down to a Babe Rainbow show just to see the most glorious blonde beard in existence – although if you don’t like psych music then you probably don’t like beards – and you probably stopped reading this article when you read Secret Enchanted Broccoli Forest.
