Vinyl 45 offer the perfect road trip accompaniment on radiant new single ‘Top Down’

Western Sydney septet Vinyl 45 escape the 9 to 5 on their blissful joyride of a single, Top Down.

Vinyl 45 have released their sophomore single Top Down. A sublime blend of jazz, alt-rock and rap, the track opens with blissful guitar strums and keys courtesy of bandmates Jayden Williams, Alex Ancora and Curly J Russel. Later, Vinyl 45 vocalist Aaron Gunawickrema sings in rustic vocals of a cruisy road trip; the type of sunlit joyride where you “leave the city behind and get high.”

Hop on in my whip,” Gunawickrema sings atop lush, multi-instrumental production and heavenly backing harmonies,“let’s take a ride.” The lyrical content of Top Down is perfectly matched by its sonics, which flow listlessly like the mileage of an old-school convertible; offering the perfect playlist addition for a road trip on a summer’s day.

Top Down elsewhere enlists the bars of truboy, who raps of backseat rendezvous and escaping the stresses of a 9 to 5. The single is rounded out by the groove-laden percussion of drummer Lachlan Pollard, with the DJ decks manned by Jake Breden. Top Down is accompanied by a radiant music video, which was directed by Kushal Bhattarai.

The clip features all bandmates of Vinyl 45, including former lead guitarist Aaron Oo who has since been replaced by Lachlan Fitzgerald. Every bit as radiant as Top Down itself, the music video follows a car as it travels along coastal retreats, with Vinyl 45 performing in gold-hued locales before truboy unleashes a kerbside second verse.

Top Down was mixed by Mitchell Hart and mastered by Ben Feggans. It marks Vinyl 45’s second-ever single, having released their debut track Information in October of last year.  The band hails from Western Sydney, and describes themselves as “dedicated, if not destined to bring you danceable grooves” in a press statement.

It’s a promise that certainly rings true on Top Down, which is all but certain to comprise the tracklist of your upcoming summer vacation. Vinyl 45 celebrated the release of the new single with a launch party at The Vanguard in Newtown earlier this month, where they were accompanied by fellow musicians Sun Affair and Splendid Fiasco.
