Solo projects and psych bands seem to be something of a vogue these days – the most prominent example here in Aus probably being Tame Impala – what with the overwhelming local success of Pond off the back of TI and ex-drummer Jay Watson’s very recent GUM project. But hey, the last thing the music blogosphere needs is another article on Tame Impala.
The solo project from Simon Relf, best known for his work in Sydney institution Deep Sea Arcade, is a hella sweet blend of 00’s post-britpop and modern, fluctuating rock and roll. Transcending rather than jumping on a bandwagon, The Tambourine Girls lastest single Blood and Bones continues and refines the strong melodics of DSA’s deep swirl, packaging it into something entirely consumable in a single bite.
Impressively poetic, last month’s single showcases a very Humbug lyricism dressed up in Relf’s well defined vocal range. Indeed, the songs have apparently been influenced by Relf’s time living on the south coast, and upon second listen you get a distinctly beachy (not surfy) feel rolling in the mescaline undercurrents of the track.
Happy are proud to premiere the songwriter’s debut video for Blood and Bones, which captures in many ways the semi-acoustic, semi-analogue feel of Relf’s work. Jimmi James Wright (director) gives us lots of indefinite and hazy shots, infinitely overlayed with each other, tinged with a very Loveless style blend of soft pinks, greens and purples.
This single is the first off what has the potential to be one of the better psych-pop EP’s to come out of Sydney this year – Tambourine Girls’ The End Of Time due to come out later this year. Check out the vid above and catch him support Dustin Tebbutt along the East Coast in May. Dates below:
